In the coastal town of Tywyn in Wales, there is a small and unique cinema. It has not been modernised and retains a Victorian feel. Generations of local people and holiday makers have been going there for years. On May 12th 2010 Bob and Avril Garrod will retire, having run the cinema as a family business for 30 years…
My inspiration for the film was to capture the end of an era. The minute I walked in the cinema, I was hooked. It was like stepping back in time. Bob is one of those characters larger than life itself and with Avril expresses the heart and soul of the cinema. The film was not funded – it’s a memento for Bob and Avril and jointly owned by them.
I shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105mm lens F4 and also a 50mm F1.8 fixed focus lens for the darkest shots. I shot verite style using a Tiffen Steady Stick and for the other shots used a Sachtler fluid head tripod. Sound was recorded separately on a SQN 4S Series IVe Mixer with
Sennheiser MKH60 directional microphone and boom pole, 2 x Micron Explorer diversity radio mics. No lights!!!

This is a short clip from the beginning of a sequence called the Ugly Truth – where a girl realises that oil is used to make cosmetics. The theme represents the idea that oil is used to make all kinds of everyday things – something we take for granted.
Filmed with the Canon5D Mark II HD-DSLR.
